Deeside Shuttle, the successful home to work transport service has been re-launched.
Since its introduction in 2003, the Deeside Shuttle has transformed access to employment on Deeside Industrial Park.
Providing almost a "door to door" service between home and work, it quickly became popular with those who previously drove to work by car, relied on lifts or were unable to access employment.
Trips can be booked on a daily or weekly basis by telephone to a control centre at County Hall, Mold which is staffed from 0730 to 1830 hrs.
A purpose built computer software system then allocates each trip to the most appropriate vehicle. The control room staff are in regular contact with the Shuttle drivers so that booking information can be passed to them. Drivers can also give updates on traffic hold ups which can affect pick up times.
Passenger numbers rose to nearly 3,000 a week and the areas served expanded from Connah's Quay, Shotton and Queensferry to include Flint, Ewloe, Sandycroft, Mancot and Hawarden. By connecting with trains at Flint and Shotton stations, the Shuttle also provides links from more distant parts of North Wales.
After three years of operation, it was decided to give the service a "make over". New publicity material has been created, a new web-site ( www.theshuttlebus.com) can now be used to make bookings as well as provide information and the service has been further extended to serve Buckley and Holywell at certain times of the day.
The Shuttle is subsidised by the Welsh Assembly Government and Flintshire County Council for its continued operation.
Councillor Gareth Williams said:
"Flintshire County Council is very proud to have introduced and expanded the Deeside Shuttle which has improved access to employment for many people and provided a viable alternative to the private car. We welcome the support that has been given by the Welsh Assembly Government and we will work with them and employers to maintain and expand the service. The recent extensions to Buckley and Holywell mean that even more people now benefit."
